“Every Obstacle Is For Good”

February 21, 2024

I am in the process of planning a city-wide event in the city of Athens Greece.  I have been there twice in the past three months and have met some amazing people in a historic backdrop.  I definitely hope that anyone that gets a chance can experience Athens and their incredible culture, history and …. Yes, food!

I am told that there is a saying for everything in Greece.  I definitely heard a few of them, but one is standing out- I can’t get it out of my head.  The quote is “Every Obstacle Is For Good” or something that at least translates to that.  It smacked me that as a culture, the Greeks realized that when you have a foundation in a relationship, that you can weather problems together and at the very least it becomes a teachable moment.  At the most ideal, it opens up new possibilities that may not have been there had it not been for you managing a problem together.  As a culture!  That is pretty cool stuff.  For me, I had to learn this the hard way, but now I know that the journey through a problem, albeit stressful, is also defining who you are, what your potential is, and putting it behind.  That should be on both sides of the challenge, whether it is your mistake, the other persons.  Now I must work on embracing this as an accidental improvement in relationships and overall life experiences.

My old boss and lifetime friend James LaRubio taught me that the fastest way through a mistake is to “Admit it, and work hard to get through it, and then learn from it.” He taught me this when I was in my early 20’s and needed the lesson.  I tend to beat myself up and let it linger when I make a mistake.  Bookended here from early in my career to now, I realize yet again, that when you make a mistake, stand up, own it, work your way through it and learn from it.  You know….”Every Obstacle Is For Good”
